Traditional Bows
If you’re new at archery, then this article aims to show interested beginners the different types of traditional
bows, which remain to be popular choices in the sport.
Before you learn how to hold and draw the bow and arrow the proper way, it is important that you find out first the
history and features of different types of traditional bows you can find in the market today. This way, you’ll have
an idea of which archery bow is the best choice for you, your skills and your taste.
The Recurve Bow
The recurve bow, said to have been developed by various Asian cultures, is one that has tips in the shape of
working limbs, bent backward the opposite way from the draw when not in used or at rest. Because of this unique
curve feature, the bow provides you with extra power once it is drawn, this also helps to release the bows energy
more efficiently.
The recurve limbs adds velocity in the arrow, pushed no doubt by that extra flick which takes place at the last
second, right before the arrow leaves the hold of the strings. The amount of curve may vary; some archery bow
brands and models of this kind have only a slight curve at the tips, and some have deep curves in the form of a
reversed letter C.
The Composite Bow
The composite bow, one of the more popular weapons of choice in hunting. The composite bow traces its ancestry to a
number of cultures, but the Native Americans seem to be the widely accepted parents, although Arab and other
Asiatic bows of the same design boast of better craftsmanship. Materials used in composite bows are many, hence its
name. The common ones include various types of wood, horn, sinew, and even plant fibers.
The Chinese are said to have been very efficient and successful in creating traditional bows from vegetation.
Today, modern composite bows use many layers of wood, steel, and sometimes fiberglass. The use of different
materials gives composite bows the best properties of each material, resulting in an improved performance of
strength and speed in the bow.
The Longbow
The longbow is also a longtime favorite, said to be the traditional model used by European archers. It carries no
curves, pulleys or cams; it is a simple self bow that has a straight or slightly tipped length of wood, when strung
it looks like a "D" shape and is around six feet in length. Today, longbows are made
and manufactured using contemporary bow-making materials, such as fiberglass and laminations, a far cry from the
original one wood designed longbows.
There are many other types of traditional bows worth checking out, including the flat bow, the cross bow, and the
short bow, to name just a few. Although basically today the traditional bows that are mainly available and popular
are the recurve bow and longbow. The traditional bows are designed today to be more effeciently and faster, which
is great for bow hunting or target archery.
