Cross Bows – Are They For You?
When it comes to bow hunting or target archery, the choice of a bow or cross bow is important. But making the
choice is not simple. There are four categories or main types of bows: the recurve bow, the compound bow, long bow
and cross bows. Each type has its unique features and the choice depends on how you intend to use it.

If you are in for a traditional shooting, the long bow can be a great pick. Compound bows on the other hand, are
very commonly used nowadays in hunting and target archery. They are equipped with cams and pulleys which make them
powerful and accurate in the right hands. Compared to a compound bow type, the cross
bow is much shorter in length and are built in a rifle-like stock, this archery bow type designed for a cock
and shoot style.
The choice of a cross bow is ultimately a matter of preference. There is an ongoing comparison and debate between
all the different bows and styles. Every bow has its negatives and positives and the cross bow is no different.
To shed some light, here are the advantages of cross bows.
• Size of crossbow. Most archers or bow hunters argue that the compact rifle design of a cross bow is easier in
compact situations to get off a shot. For a quick aim and release whether in a tree stand or a blind, a cross bow
is reasonably compact for heavy brush and tight conditions.
• A combination of power and accuracy, which is ideal for some older and younger archers who may not have the
physical strength for a normal hunting bow. The cross bow is also easier to line up and shoot with its rifle like
sights. The cross bow might be suitable for archers who have injuries or disabilities and can’t shoot a normal
bow.
• Always ready to shoot. Compared to straight bows, cross bows are designed in a rifle-like stock. It can be always
cocked and ready for shoot anytime which makes it ideal for hunting trips.
But before you decide which bow fits you, consider the following factors before narrowing your options.
• The cross bow in some countries and states may be illegal or you may need a license similar to a firearm to use
one.
• The physical weight of the cross bow can become heavy. You also have to feel comfortable carrying it around for
targeting. If you are a bow hunter, this factor is very crucial.
• No matter how powerful and advanced a bow is if the user is not properly trained or not ready to handle that type
of equipment then it is useless. You have to make sure to choose the equipment that matches your skill level. The
cross bow has limited range and accuracy for longer shots, but once again can come down to the skill level of the
archer.
Whether it is cross bows, recurve, longbows or compound bows that catch your eye, you have to make sure that the
archery bow works for you and not the other way around.
