Archery has always been the source of interest, hobby and a all consuming passion for many. It has captivated
people since medieval times and today people are still very much enthusiastic about target archery, bow hunting and
the latest gadgets and archery supplies.
There are innumerable archery suppliers right across the globe. While the Australian archery and bowhunting
scene isn’t quite as big as the American or European following, Australia has enough equipment and archery supplies
available to cater for our diverse archery sport and needs.
Today the archery shops contain a wide variety of brands, equipment and archery supplies depending on your
preferences. You can select bows and arrows, bow sights, quivers, tabs, armguards, archery release aides,
broadheads and plenty of other accessories for your sport.
With bows, they are basically put into four categories if you include the crossbow. They are longbow, recurve and
compound and the crossbow. However, you also have other names, styles and designs of bows as well, but they are the
main four types. All these styles of archery bows are available in the marketplace today.
Some of the well known bow brands and archery equipment manufacturers include, Hoyt Archery, Bowtech, Mathews Bows,
Easton Archery, Bohning, Fred Bear Archery, TruGlo, PSE, Martin Archery and Samick bows to just name a few.
The prices also vary from minimal spending for a bow and arrow set, all the way up to expensive handmade archery
supplies and the latest high tech speed bows.
Some archery supplies you can't be without and the arrow is one of them. The arrow is made up of the shaft,
arrowhead, nock and fletching. The shaft can be made from high tech construction materials like aluminium and
carbon fibre composites or as simply as wood.
Depending on the usage the choice, archery arrows will differ from person to
person. Traditional archers love the wooden grain arrows and finds it compliments there archery style.
No matter what material you choose for the arrow, make sure the spine stiffness is correct. A too flexible or
too stiff an arrow will not shoot as efficiently as it can.
At present arrows made of carbon alloy and a combination of materials are popular because of their strength and
lightweight, they are being widely used by target archers in the Olympics and for bow hunting all over the
world.
One important addition to the complete arrow is the arrowhead and fletching. These help stabilise the projectile
and allow it to be able to hit the target. Without the weight of the tip and spin and guidance of the fletching the
arrow would lurch all over the place.
Fletching provides the balance to the arrows and some are attached to spin the arrow so it shoots true.
Fletching is generally made out of plastic, (called vanes) or bird feathers, like turkey.
The arrowheads are also made of different type of materials, some heads for small game bow hunting are made of
plastic or even rubber and others for target archery are made out of hard materials like metals. Broadheads might
be designed with a couple of different metal materials, so it can achieve a razor sharp edge, but still be
strong.
Most archery supplies are made from overseas, although there are some local Australian manufacturers that make
good broadheads and high quality custom bows. Some of the Aus broadhead brands include, Tusker Broadheads, Outback
Broadheads and Black Stump Broadheads.
Today archery has become a popular sporting and hunting activity in Australia and you will find plenty of archery
supplies to cater for all of your needs.
